Baan Khor Khuang Nok, Tambon Bor Klua Tai, Amphoe Bor Klua, Nan Province

Baan Khor Khuang Nok has always been known as the village with decent soil and clean air. However, the area has its cultivation restrictions and is meant to be a preservation area since it is located next to Doi Pu Ka’s natural park. The national park’s staff, also known as ‘Pa Mai’ has a heart towards the villager’s way of living and therefore, allowed the villagers to use some plots of land to grow the crops for their own consumption and for commercial purposes. With the help of Pa Mai and the unity of the villagers, the agricultural project began.

The project started with a group of fifteen women in the village who decided to join forces and start growing crops. With their commitment and unity, they have successfully collaborated with every local governmental units and various organizations that work in the area. On top of that, their products are also awarded as GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) from Bor Klua’s Agricultural District Office. There are up to 20 types of vegetables to choose from and all are intentionally made to be affordable. Currently, the village has been setting itself up to be a community enterprise and have become a supplier for many restaurants in Nan city. This establishment has been initiated by the new generations within the community who had opportunities to attend schools, obtain university degrees, and return to their hometown to expand these developments for the community.

As part of Raks Thai Foundation’s (CARE Thailand) goal to promote “Women Economic Empowerment” under the ‘Nan women and decent work’ conceptual framework, the organization has worked towards building the entrepreneurial mindset for the Lua community at Khor Khuang Nok Village. The focus has been to construct spaces dedicated to farming and provide knowledge on online marketing so that the community will be able to sell their own products and establish food and economic security on their own.
